Why this is suddenly part of the job
An assistant answering "who does website design in Cornwall" does not return ten links. It gives one answer, assembled from pages it could read cleanly and attribute confidently. If your site is not one of those pages, you are not in the answer at all — and there is no page two to be on.
This runs alongside traditional search work rather than instead of it. The same page can rank in Google and get quoted by ChatGPT, but only if it is built to do both.
What actually makes a page quotable
Direct answers in the first line, rather than three paragraphs of warm-up before the fact. Questions phrased the way people actually ask them. A table of hard facts an assistant can lift without interpreting. A visible last-updated date, so the model can tell the page is current. Proper structured markup so the machine and the human are reading the same thing.
And crucially, the facts have to be consistent everywhere — your address, your hours, your service area, your prices. Assistants downgrade sources that contradict themselves.
